More About Glen

Q: Who died and made you the 78 expert?

A: I'm not an expert! I *have* spent many years collecting, listening, studying and playing the music of the 20's and 30's. I make lots of mistakes, and I'm always learning something new. Not every pronouncement from my lips is a pearl of wisdom; not every opinion of mine must be accepted as dogma. I have ears, I have a brain... I try to use them both.

Q: Do you still collect records?

A: Sadly, no. I simply haven't the money or the space to do it, plus I understand its getting much harder to find records "in the wild" (ie, not from other collectors or auctions). I spent many happy hours driving through rural Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Ohio, looking for records. You never knew what you'd find; sometimes nothing, but more often than not you'd come home with some neat stuff. I do miss it...

Q: What instruments did/do you play?

A: Well, let's see: soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, flute, drums, piano and string bass. I used to piddle around with trumpet and trombone, but I was really, really terrible! I'm also a conductor of some repute - not all of it ill!

Q: Do you still play?

A: No. I used to play professionally, but it got to where it just hurt too much (both figuratively and literally) to continue. I miss the joy of performing and just being with other musicians. I wouldn't mind getting back into it... anyone need a good accurate dance-band drummer, or a good bluegrass bass player? I can sight read anything and play any of the sax parts you like. Email me!

Q: What were you, some kind of musical prodigy?

A: No; I guess I had some talent, and I learned a good work ethic from my father early on. I started playing professionally when I was 14 and I was in considerable demand because I was good, could read anything, was reliable, and was a pretty nice guy. I played in just about any sort of ensemble you could name: jazz ensembles, symphony orchestras, pit orchestras, bluegrass bands, bebop groups, etc. I was lucky, I got to travel and see a lot of the world thanks to music.

Q: What are your favorite bands/Who are your favorite musicians?

A: There's a lot of 'em: Ted Weems' band from the late 20's, Coon-Sanders, Bernie Cummins, Bert Lown, almost all the Goldkette bands, Willard Robison, Fletcher Henderson, Bix, Frank Trumbauer, Bill Challis, Adrian Rollini, Benny Goodman, Fats Waller and a million others. I have a special spot in my heart for Les Elgart and his Orchestra (yes, from the 50s!) - what I wouldn't give to have played baritone sax in that band!

Q: I have emailed you several times and you've never answered! Why are you so mean to me?

A: I reply to *every* email I receive, but I've found that some people's mail server or mail client is a bit over-zealous in marking my replies as spam. There's not much I can do; the worst offenders seem to be AOL and Verizon. *You* should make sure your mail server or mail client is configured to allow email from the "2multiples.com" domain to come through. I can't help you with that - you must check with your internet host or the help files for your email client. This also applies to those who have subscribed to the email list but haven't received the confirmation email.
